Philippines: Tragedy in Palawan unites environmental campaigners

A few weeks ago the small, but committed, group of environmental campaigners on Palawan Island in the Philippines were shocked by the murder of Gerry Ortega.

Dr Gerado 'Gerry' Ortega was well known in Palawan as a broadcaster and campaigner and was extremely active in the fight to protect Palawan's forests from over eager mineral extraction and oil palm plantations - an ongoing story that has featured many times on the pages of Plant Talk.

Since Ortega's death the campaign to protect Palawan's natural riches has intensified and a new petition to attract 10 million signatures is doing its rounds on the internet.
