UK IN PICTURES: Wild about summer
10.08.10
Plant Talk received an overwhelmingly positive reaction to Tori Green's last photo series so as we reach the height of summer in the UK, it's time for some more.
There is perhaps nothing more enigmatic than poppy (Papaver rhoeas) flowers waving in summer fields or hedgerows. They were immortalised in the 1915 poem In Flanders Fields by John McCrae.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Greg Farrington, Executive Director of the California Academy of Sciences, recently visited the vast island of Madagascar with some of his team of researchers. He was kind enough to share some of his beautiful images of the extraordinary landscapes, plants, and people (and in a break from tradition, some animals too!) with Plant Talk.
